What Is Herbal Medicine Used For?

Discover how herbal medicine can help:  from treating fatigue and anxiety states to acute and chronic conditions such as IBS and chest infections.

Restoring vitality: managing stress and easing fatigue

help1Herbal medicine has been used for centuries to increase health, vitality, and a sense of wellbeing.

You do not need to be ill to benefit from herbal medicine.

Become a patient at Herbalist Scotland to take advantage of energy-boosting tonics such as Spring cleansers, Winter warmers, revelry tonics (a tonic to help with the effects of a little too much revelry!), and Spirit-lifting tonics.

For those who would like more energy, or who need help in managing stress,  we use a class of herbs called adaptogens, researched and developed in both Russia and China, which have the wonderful capacity to physiologically increase our resistance to stress (we then ‘adapt’ more efficiently to stressful situations).  These herbs, now prescribed by qualified medical herbalists, were used both to enhance Olympic performance in elite athletes (they still are), and to maintain health and resistance to infection and fatigue in labourers in the Siberian salt mines!  Some of these herbs support the adrenal and thyroid glands physiologically, and yet others enhance nervous system communication within the body, increasing our wellbeing and vitality.

If you are in need of an energy boost, or to increase your ability to adapt to stress, please get in touch.

Chronic conditions: IBS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, recurring infections

Herbal medicine is used extensively and effectively for chronic conditions and syndromes such as chronic painchronic fatiguefibromyalgiairritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anxiety stateslow energy and susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections.  Herbal medicine is particularly appropriate here as it looks at how the systems of the body function individually, and in interaction with each other – smoothly, or causing imbalance and dysfunction.  Herbs are selected to restore function on the basis of the individual patient’s ‘functioning’ profile, as well as to deal with infection and inflammation.

For chronic conditions an in-depth consultation is often necessary, as we need to see the whole picture to work out what is happening.  If you need help, support, advice and herbal medicine in a complex or ‘undiagnosed’ syndrome, please get in touch to become a patient and book your initial consultation.

Acute conditions: chest infections, cystitis, muscle sprains, varicose veins and more

help2Acute conditions, including recurring ones, such as cystitis and chest infections are also effectively addressed with herbal medicine.  Here we look at what is causing the recurrence and address that as well as giving immediate symptomatic relief.  Simple throat or chest infections or colds, for instance, benefit quickly from herbal medicine.

For many minor or acute conditions only a short consultation is necessary once you are a patient.  For relief from ailments such as colds, coughs, sore throat, varicose veins, haemorrhoids (piles), muscle sprains, or urinary tract infections, please get in touch for a short consultation.

Female hormonal health: menopausal symptoms, post-natal adjustment

Herbal medicine is very effective in addressing hormonal imbalances found, for instance, in menopausal symptoms or post-natal adjustment.  We look at what is causing the imbalance and help the body adjust smoothly, as well as providing relief for the symptoms.

If you are experiencing hot flushes, mood swings, anxiety and irritability, brain fog, low energy and other symptoms around menopause, please get in touch to become a patient and see what we can do for you.  Post-natal ladies, let us help you get back up to strength with an individually prescribed post-natal tonic!

Anxiety and depression: nervous system overwhelm

Symptoms of anxiety and high levels of stress are often accompanied by other problems. Anne has many years’ experience of working with people suffering from anxiety, depression and overwhelm, and her training and practice encompass several effective approaches.  Her herbal prescriptions take all dysfunction or imbalance into account.  For instance, anxiety or depression may be accompanied by digestive problems, brain fog, thyroid imbalance, or physical pain and fatigue, which are part of the bigger picture.

Herbal medicine can also gently help a person to ‘lift out of’ a depressive state or ‘come down from’ an anxiety state.  As a medical herbalist, Anne is trained to prescribe herbs which do not interact with conventional medications, and will look at supporting other aspects of wellness at the same time, for instance addressing too high or too low blood pressure.

It is really important for your health that cessation of any conventional prescribed medicine is undertaken with the full consultation of your herbalist and your GP or consultant, and many are happy to work with herbalists to reduce medication in favour of an effective herbal prescription with fewer or no side effects.

For help with anxiety and overwhelm states, get in touch today to become a patient and book your initial consultation.

Skin care: eczema, acne, psoriasis, bacterial and viral infections - and just beauty!

help3Herbalist Scotland has a range of skin care products (they change from time to time) available for sale to existing patients.  These are hand-made by Anne and Joolz (of the Pain Recovery clinic) and contain either no preservative (healing ointments, soaps) or very little (face and body creams).  We make our soaps, from scratch, using lye, oils, and botanicals.  Our products always turn out differently wonderful, so please do enquire about the range we have in stock at the moment.  Testers are always available.  From time to time we do workshops on making your own, so please ask if you are interested.

If you are new to Herbalist Scotland, only a very short consultation is required (1 – 3 minutes) to buy these products, so please do get in touch if you would like to purchase.  New batches and new ranges are announced via the Facebook page, so do follow us (button on the ‘book now’ page) if you would like to be kept in the loop.

For medical conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis and skin infections, become a patient and take advantage of our creams, ointments, balms and internal medicines.

What we do not do

It’s fairly obvious, but worth stating:  medical herbalists don’t do surgery, or anything that requires A & E.  We do not treat cancer, although we can support the body whilst conventional cancer treatment is ongoing.  We don’t treat STDs, and ‘notifiable’ diseases are as notifiable for us as they are for other health practitioners.

We also sometimes can’t ‘fix’ someone just by giving them a bottle of tincture;  healing requires the engagement of the person healing, and sometimes it requires gentle lifestyle changes, such as moving a little every day, or not eating so many sweets or highly processed foods.
